Moss Troopers Wherigo Player Guide
What is Wherigo
Wherigo is a toolset for creating
and playing GPS-enabled adventures in the real world. Learn more by visiting
the Wherigo website.

Playing Wherigo
If
you have never played a Wherigo Cartridge before read
about the Wherigo
Player here.
We
also suggest you play the Wherigo tutorial cartridge to familiarize yourself with
your Wherigo Player software.
Navigating Between Zones
One
of the key parts of Wherigo is moving between zones. To
navigate to a zone in most devices choose the zone from the locations menu and
follow the red arrow until the distance reads “here”. This should be very
similar to navigating to a waypoint or a geocache.
Activating a Cartridge
Moss
Troopers add a requirement to activate a cartridge before it can be played. The
reason for this is that the cartridge will be posted on Wherigo.com while the
corresponding cache is being reviewed. The activation code will be on the cache
page to prevent anyone from starting the cartridge before the cache has been
published. You will be prompted for this code when the cartridge is opened.
Playing advice from
the Moss Troopers
It’s
important to have the cartridge running whenever you’re moving. Events in the
game are triggered when you physically enter specific areas and you might miss
something if your Wherigo device is turned off.
Read
everything carefully. Always check to see if there is more information by
scrolling.
You
should stand in one place while reading messages on the screen. If you walk in
or out of a ‘zone’ while reading a message you might trigger an event which
causes that message to disappear. Message boxes only appear once.
Familiarize
yourself with your Wherigo player's save function.
Saving varies in different devices. In the devices that the Moss Troopers have
used you are prompted to save when closing (or quitting) a cartridge. You are
prompted to resume the saved game when opening the cartridge again. We suggest
you save often in case the cartridge crashes or your batteries die.
Due
to the large nature of Wherigo cartridges you device
might respond slowly. This is because it is processing hidden information important
to the game. Please be patient.
Playing in the
Emulator
If
you don’t have a Wherigo enabled device you can use
the emulator.
Download
the Pocket PC version of the Cartridge you wish to play.
Download
and install the Wherigo builder.
Open
the builder and select tools/emulator.
In
the emulator select the ‘main’ button and browse for the folder that contains
the cartridge you wish to play. (If not prompted)
Pretend
the little man on the map is you and move him to the appropriate locations.
For
Moss Trooper cartridges you will still need to physically go to locations to
gather information.
Currently
the builder is only available for Microsoft Windows and requires an internet
connection.
Wherigo Issues
Wherigo is fairly new so the Groundspeak folks are still working out the kinks. Some
known issues the Moss Troopers have encountered are as follows.
Some
devices require you to zero out in a ‘zone’ before an event will trigger. Try
wandering around the area a bit, since GPS accuracy is always variable.
Some
commands don’t fire in some devices. For example, sometimes no new tasks or
items appear. We’ve tried our best to make this cartridge compatible with all
devices. Make sure you are running the latest version of the Wherigo Player available on the Wherigo website.
If you have a Garmin you can update your software on the Garmin
Website.
The builder, and hence the emulator, doesn’t run on some computers. Make sure
you have downloaded and installed the Microsoft .NET Framework package as
instructed on the builder download page (Link). If it’s still
not working download and install Microsoft
Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86). Currently the builder is
only available for Microsoft Windows and requires an internet connection.
If
you have any other issues e-mail us through our profile. Please be patient,
this e-mail is only checked on weekdays. You can also seek help in the fora. (Link).
